The Labor Story

Here is the story of how little EVIE JOY KNIGHT came into the world on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 12:41 p.m. We must acknowledge that the Lord has been present in all aspects of the arrival of our little blessing. He is so good!

This is a picture of Jim and I right before we left for the hospital. Grandma and Grandpa Thompson came over to stay with Evan.

Here is the last picture of Evie inside my tummy at almost exactly 40 weeks, the official due date was January 11, 2010.

To sum up the delivery of our daughter it was FAST. We had hoped to post some kind of update about how we checked into the hospital on Facebook or send text messages, but the first message we were able to get out was that she is here! :) This includes even letting my parents know who were watching Evan. Things went super quick once we arrived at the hospital.

We officially checked into the hospital at 9:55 a.m. and had her in less than 3 hours. So crazy! The funny thing is that we were kind of hanging around the house waiting to go in thinking it would probably take awhile like it did with Evan. We arrived at the hospital 4:00 a.m. with Evan and didn't have him until around 7:00 p.m. that evening. So wrong about her labor being similar - good thing we went in when we did.

Labor actually started at about 12:00 a.m., with consistent, close contractions at 5:00 a.m. We tried to get as much sleep as possible that night as we knew things were probably going to happen the next day. When we arrived at Kaiser I was between 4 and 5 centimeters and 90% effaced, and the contractions were lasting between 1 and 2 minutes taking place every 3 minutes. Good times! The plan was to get the epidural, which I did, but the best part is that right after I got it I had to push and she was ready to come out. So the epidural did not
start working until after she was already here and I was trying to hold and feed her. So funny! :)

The labor was so much different than with Evan, she came in 3 pushes, about 5 minutes. With Evan I pushed for 3 hours and he still needed a little vacuum and an episiotomy. :) The best part is I totally wasn't as sore as with Evan. Only needed on stitch. God is so good! He knew that I would need the strength and mobility to help care for both Evan and Evie. :)

The hospital was also great; Kaiser Roseville! :) We loved our nurses and doctors. The doctor that delivered us we actually just meet as Evie was coming out, since she came so fast, the previous doctor that examined me when we checked in was at lunch. Nevertheless, both were amazing and did a fantastic job!

My bother and sister-in-law visited us the night Evie was born and took this picture along with several of the other fabulous family pictures at the hospital. Thank you both so much!

Little Evie is such a blessing already. She was almost exactly Evan's same size, 6 lbs 8 oz, he was 6 lbs 10 oz and they both were 19 inches long. The big difference is she has some hair. :) Yippee, bring on the hair bows! :) The machine pictured below shows her birth weight.

Here she is getting her first bath and her hair combed by nurse Josie. She absolutely loved this part.

Here we are in the postpartum room enjoying little Evie.

Our stay at the hospital was just a little over 24 hours. We checked out at about 2:30 p.m. It was nice to be going home so quickly and to get back to our little guy, Evan too. Plus, you can't get any real sleep in a hospital with the staff coming in and out so much. :)

Due to our short stay we only had a few visitors, Grandma and Grandpa Thompson. Who got us the adorable balloon and beautiful flowers.

Here is Evie in her car seat with her first real outfit on. She wasn't too happy to be unswaddled and put into this seat, but did calm down once we got to the car.

When we got home from the hospital Evan had just woken up from his nap. He initially was very excited to see Evie and couldn't wait for her to get out of the car seat. But, Evie started crying and then so did he. He slowly has been accepting her and loves giving her hugs and kisses. He still doesn't enjoy her crying very much and doesn't want her to sit in any of his seats (i.e. baby swing, bouncer chair, car seat). :)

To help Evan accept Evie more into the family she got him this cool fire truck with balls along with help from my parents. He loved it and thought she was pretty cool for thinking of him. :)
