First Broken Bone

Our first broken bone award for our family has been given to...Evan.  It happened on Friday, September 6.  Evan feel off the monkey bars and right on his wrist at our friend's Dave and Nilda's house.  It was an unfortunate accident.  Of course before the incident he was doing amazing going across and this was going to be his final time before leaving.  Jim was standing right next to him when it happened and was pretty sure it was probably broken the way he was reacting and from seeing the actual fall.  The good thing is that the accident happened on a Friday night and we didn't have school the next morning or anything really important the next day that we couldn't miss.  So I stayed with the girls and Evan and Jim went to the ER.  It was a late night, but they got him right in at Kaiser, x-rayed it, and saw there was indeed a fracture.  Evan was given a splint for the weekend and received his cast on Monday, September 9 after school.  The initial news that he would be wearing a cast was not taken well.  He was pretty sad; especially on Saturday when his new reality of the next few weeks set in.  However, he slowly perked up and accepted that it wouldn't be that bad.
He looks super happy in the picture above, but was actually very nervous going to church and school following the accident.   The first day he returned to school with the splint, and I could barely get him out of the car.  His teachers and fellow students were great and helped him feel comfortable during the day.

Some of his friends even made him a card and gave him gifts.  It was the sweetest thing and really brightened his day.  Here is a picture of some of the notes.
Here he is getting his cast.  He initially wanted his favorite color yellow.  However, this was not a choice offered, he briefly considered red, and then saw green and was sold! :)

After four weeks of the cast it was finally time to get it removed on Monday, October 7.  Here is Evan pictured a little bit before his appointment that day.
The cast had gotten pretty dirty and smelly.  I think Jim and I were more excited to get the cast off than Evan.  The actual procedure to get it off was traumatic for Evan, he didn't like the machine and the feeling of it touching his arm after not having been touched for four weeks.  The x-ray after was super traumatic too.  However, the doctor said it was all healed and just needed about a month to ensure full strength.
Evan was very hesitant to let go of his wrist for most of that evening after our appointment, but that night and the next morning it was pretty much back to how he used to be without his cast.
We are very proud of our brave boy and were happy to say goodbye to Mr. Cast!!!  Hope we don't see you again anytime soon. :)
